Two turbines of the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) will start generating hydropower after five months, said Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed of Ethiopia.
He made the remark speaking to the state broadcaster ETV, today while visiting the $5 billion GERD with President Isaias Afwerki of Eritrea. When it goes fully operational a few years later, GERD will have 10 turbines generating over 5,000 megawatts of electricity – more than double the current total electricity the country is currently generating.
President Isaias is the first head of state to visit the controversial GERD, which Egypt has been opposing claiming that it will reduce its water share from the Nile River. While Ethiopia on the other hand has been arguing that electricity is not a luxury for half of its population over its over 60 million people currently living in darkness.

The West Darfur Doctors Committee said in a statement that, despite peace slowly returning to the city, the violence has expanded into the Murnei and Goker areas. New bodies have already been found in these areas and they expect more bodies and injured people to be recovered in the coming days.
The committee also explained that they face a shortage of medical personnel and that blood bank stocks are slowly depleting. They also highlighted that the two Kerending camps in El Geneina locality had been looted and that thousands of displaced people are now homeless and lack water, food, and medicine.

Relations between Sudan and Ethiopia remain tense as attacks by Ethiopian militiamen in eastern Sudan remain commonplace and negotiations on the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) continue to face difficulties.
On Saturday, Ethiopian militiamen (known as
shifta in the region) killed two Sudanese shepherds and stole 250 cattle in East El Galabat locality, El Gedaref.
Eid El Zein, a local leader from the border town of El Lahouin, said in a press statement that shifta trespassed Sudanese lands and fatally stabbed two shepherds named El Zein Ahmed and Adam Ahmed before fleeing back to Ethiopian lands.
