Thanks to a spongy M&M-like technology, contaminated soil in the Detroit River downstream of the MacArthur Bridge has been contained.
Powdered activated carbon was used to absorb the contaminated soil in the $3.6 million Detroit RiverWalk project that finished in December.
“Activated carbon is a pure form [of carbon] that’s used to absorb contaminants,” said John Collins, the general manager for AquaBlok, the Ohio contamination remediation company that created the carbon under the brand name of AquaGate +PAC.
The project was a partnership between the EPA and the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy. The contaminated sediment was within the Detroit River Area of Concern, one of the binational toxic hotspots that federal agencies have identified on the Great Lakes.

The former luxury mansion of a Detroit automaker is the site of an attempt to recreate the scarce natural shoreline along Lake St. Clair.
The Ford House Cove Restoration Project will encompass a mile of Lake St. Clair’s coastline and over 17 acres of coastal marsh, nearshore habitat and forested wetlands.
The Edsel & Eleanor Ford House, east of Detroit in Grosse Pointe Shores, is working with the Great Lakes Commission to complete the project. The mansion is now a museum and public scenic area.
Separating the boons from the boondoggles
By Pam Taylor
Environmental disasters can happen in an instant (floods, spills) or slowly over time (climate change, accumulated toxins in soil, water, and air). While we want to prevent or repair damage in the best possible way, this often means choosing between boons and boondoggles. Who benefits? Who pays?
My first foray into grassroots environmentalism happened in the late 1980s, when Riga Township was picked to be the dump for low-level radioactive waste from multiple states. Many local people lived this story, so I ll boil it down - not only was the planned facility based on a prototype, the chosen site was dangerously unsuitable. This proposal was plunked onto Riga residents, accompanied by many sales presentations. The pitch included promises and drawings with spiffy landscaping to appease the locals.

The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative today released its 2021 U.S. federal priorities that focus on programs, policies and funding that are vital for the economic and environmental health of cities along the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River.
“We applaud the Biden Administration for making economic recovery, infrastructure development and environmental issues top priorities in its first one hundred days and believe that the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative’s federal priorities fit perfectly within that agenda,” said Mayor Mike Vandersteen, Chair of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative.
