Stuck at home this weekend? Count the birds in your backyard! Photo: Pamela Monahan/GBBC Feb 09, 2021 Thousands of bird watchers will take part in the annual Great Backyard Bird Count this weekend. Volunteers will count birds in their own backyards, local parks and wildlife refuges. The citizen scientist project helps track late-winter bird populations across North America. It also helps monitor how birds are responding to environmental change. Todd Moe spoke with Becca Rodomsky-Bish, project leader for the Great Backyard Bird Count at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology in Ithaca, NY.   With more folks stuck at home due to the Covid pandemic, she s expecting a greater participation rate this weekend.

0:48 The Christmas Bird Count is over but now the public is encouraged to participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count. It s open to everyone and the premise is simple: Take 15 minutes or longer and count every bird you see. When you are done counting, upload your information to birdcount.org. Credit Guy Stephens This worldwide annual event is in its 24th year. National Great Rivers Research & Education Center Environmental Educator Jen Young says that in 2020 there were more than 27 million birds counted. There were over 250,000 participants in over 194 countries, Young said. There were also over 7,000 species of birds identified.

He began recording them regularly with his iPhone this past fall and then learned how to make sonagrams of the calls to study them further. When we chatted about the question of whether he might have owls inhabiting the extensive woodland behind his house, he began doing some limited recording at night with his phone.
