Governor Whitmer signs large K-12 school budget into law By Will Kriss Jul 13, 2021 | 3:46 PM LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Tuesday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the School Aid budget into law in the presence of students, educators and school administrators at Kentwood Public Schools. Whitmer says the signing of House Bill 4411 marks a historical moment for the state by reaching the goal of eliminating the funding gap between districts at the minimum and maximum foundation allowances, as set forth by Proposal A of 1994. The bill finalizes the fiscal year 2022 School Aid budget, which totals $17.1 billion including $85.4 million from the state’s general fund, and provides cost adjustments and supplemental funding for the current 2021 year.

Governor Whitmer signs new education budget

ABC 10/CW5   Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a new $17 billion K-12 education budget. Officials say the new plan will close funding gaps in public schools throughout the state during the upcoming academic year. Additional money will also be provided for school counselors and nurses as well as mental health programs. The state is also expanding preschool access. The budget includes $169 million for the Great Start Readiness Program, which will cover eligible 4-year-olds. David Hacker is the president of the Michigan arm of the American Federation of Teachers. He said, “we’re optimistic that this long overdue reform will benefit students across the state, and we look forward to seeing what comes next.”
