Council will collect rubbish picked up in Great British Spring Clean

Cllr Norman MacRae, WODC cabinet member for the environment, picks litter Collections are on offer from West Oxfordshire District Council of any bags of litter picked up during the Great British Spring Clean (28 May-13 June). The campaign is a key milestone in Keep Britain Tidy’s calendar, bringing thousands together to clear up neighbourhoods. For 2021, the charity is calling on an army of volunteer ‘litter heroes’ to help it reach a target of a million miles of picking (#MillionMilesMission). All minutes and hours promised will be converted into miles and counted on the Great British Spring Clean website. Councillor Norman MacRae, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: “We anticipate a high level of interest from residents in this event as outdoor spaces have proved invaluable in maintaining our mental and physical well-being over the past year, providing many with a place of refuge outside the home.

Heart pounding, sweaty hands gripping the steering wheel, I drove as nonchalantly as I could down the quiet country lane, all the while glancing nervously in the rear-view mirror to ensure no one was behind me. Then, with the coast clear, I did something I have never done before I lowered the window and threw out the packaging from a takeaway meal. Looking back as I drove off, I saw an empty drink cup bounce on the road a couple of times before settling into the grassy verge. A greasy chip carton landed nearby. And just like that I had joined the selfish band of UK drivers who think nothing of littering our beautiful countryside. Not for them the imposition of taking their rubbish home or pulling into a service station to find a bin.
