West Virginia AG Morrisey discusses opioid epidemic | News, Sports, Jobs

jmancini@newsandsentinel.com PARKERSBURG A rise in overdoses in the past year could be an unintended consequence during the pandemic, state attorney general Patrick Morrisey said Thursday. Anecdotal information suggests overdoses from prescription drugs and other drugs has soared since the pandemic began a year ago, he said. Reasons vary among different people, but can be due to the impacts from isolation, or not seeing the relevant health care provider or financial problems caused by not being employed because of the response to contain the COVID-19 coronavirus, according to Morrisey. The problems can lead to other addictive habits, he said.

How J&J pause affects hard-to-reach populations in South Jersey

CAMDEN  Like many conversations, a recent chance encounter with Brenda Antinore near her Broadway home ended with a discussion about vaccines. We got the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, said Antinore, who runs She Has A Name (SHAN), an outreach for women in addiction who ve turned to prostitution. Antinore s husband, Bill, leads Seeds of Hope Ministries, a nonprofit that includes SHAN, as well as efforts to help people adjust to life post-incarceration, and a third outreach to people experiencing homelessness. Antinore said the volunteers who work with her and Bill in their respective ministries also got the J&J vaccine, but just as importantly, so did many of the women she works with through SHAN. Joseph s House, a nearby homeless shelter and outreach, offered the shots to SHAN in partnership with Project HOPE, a federally-qualified healthcare center in Downtown Camden.
