South Bend Common Council and City of South Bend make donation to Food Bank By: Maura Johnson SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The South Bend Common Council and the City of South Bend gave a monetary donation to the Food Bank of Northern Indiana at a presentation on Dec. 22. The Common Council presented a $1,000 check to the Food Bank for the work they’ve done in feeding the community during this difficult year. Statement from the Press Secretary Regarding Executive Grants of Clemency Today, President Donald J. Trump granted Full Pardons to 15 individuals and commuted part or all of the sentences of an additional 5 individuals. Alfonso Costa  President Trump granted a full pardon to Alfonso Costa, a dentist from Pittsburgh.  Dr. Costa’s request for clemency was supported by Dr. Ben Carson and Jerome Bettis, as well as by numerous business associates, patients, and community leaders from Pittsburgh.  Dr. Costa pled guilty to one count of health care fraud related to false billing, took full responsibility for his conduct, served two years of probation, and paid nearly $300,000 in fines and restitution.  He has devoted much of his adult life to service to his community, including serving on the board of the Pittsburgh Opera, and doing significant service for children and the underprivileged.

Updated: 10:32 PM EST December 21, 2020 DILLSBURG, Pa. A York County social services agency, New Hope Ministries, announced $500,000 in emergency aid for those struggling during the pandemic. New Hope Ministries is a Dillsburg-based social services agency with other locations in Dover, Hanover, Littlestown, Mechanicsburg, New Oxford and the West Shore, and a planned location in Enola. They provide help with food, housing, utility and transportation needs to 21,000 individuals from 8,700 families each year, according to a press release. New Hope has reported an uptick in need at its seven food pantries. Since the pandemic began, the agency has assisted nearly 4,000 new clients. Dillsburg resident Tracy Gettys is one of those clients. The mother of three teenage sons was already going through a rough patch after her father and sister had recently died.

Rent Assistance Nonprofit Must Spend Federal Funds Before End Of Month Restore Hope Ministries is going through thousands of applications for rent assistance as a major deadline approaches. Officials have to spend the COVID-19 relief money by Wednesday, Dec. 30. Restore Hope Ministries has helped with rent assistance for 25 years. Executive director Jeff Jaynes said last year they paid $305,000 to help people stay in their homes.  “’Honestly,’ I said, ‘that’s not sustainable.’ We can’t keep that up,” Jaynes said. Jaynes said they have paid $3.3 million since May 1. $1.5 million of those dollars came from the CARES Act. When it ends, Jaynes said it is going to take away a major level of support.
