Sounders vs LA Galaxy: Three Questions

In the early MLS years for Seattle, the LA Galaxy were the dominant team. Under Bruce Arena and with Donovan, Beckham, Keane, and Gonzalez, they were the envy of all. Galaxy captured trophies and global attention.
Those days are gone. Seattle Sounders are now the signature side in MLS, while LA doesn’t even have the attention of Los Angeles. Galaxy’s last trophy was in 2014, and over the past four years they’ve been more likely to put up a large negative goal differential than make the playoffs.

The LA Galaxy had a great opening-day win and now they’ll hope to make it a great home opener as well, as they host the New York Red Bulls Sunday afternoon at Dignity Health Sports Park.
LA beat Inter Miami 3-2 in a comeback effort a week ago, Chicharito’s brace and Sacha Kljestan’s late strike besting efforts from Robbie Robinson and Gonzalo Higuain. Chicharito got the monkey off his back and hopefully that’s for good, he’ll just keep banging in the goals.

Season-openers rarely have the number of compelling narratives that Friday’s will have. Not only will the Seattle Sounders be playing the team they dramatically beat in last year’s Western Conference final, but it’s a team with an overlooked local (Federal Way’s Hassani Dotson) and an inspired former club legend (Osvaldo Alonso). Oh yeah, and there will be about 7,000 fans in attendance, marking the first time the Sounders faithful have been allowed to watch their club in person in more than a year.
The Sounders have plenty going on, too. Nicolás Lodeiro is expected to miss the game with some sort of injury, Jordan Morris is out for the foreseeable future and they’re trying to replace a host of veterans who left in the offseason while working on a new formation. The 3-5-2 has shown promise in the preseason but Minnesota is by far the biggest test they’ll have faced since last year’s MLS Cup.
