Mustafah Commerce Ministry wants to build confidence in quality, antibiotic-free shrimp products from India for the global market To bolster confidence in India’s frozen shrimp produce, the country’s biggest seafood export item, the Centre has kicked off a new scheme to certify hatcheries and farms that adopt good aquaculture practices. India exported frozen shrimp worth almost $5 billion in 2019-20, with the U.S. and China its the biggest buyers. But a combination of factors had hurt export volumes in recent months, including container shortages and incidents of seafood consignments being rejected because of food safety concerns.

Regulatory approaches differ for burgeoning offshore aquaculture sector

Regulatory approaches differ for burgeoning offshore aquaculture sector By Share As offshore aquaculture becomes a more viable enterprise globally, a variety of regulatory approaches have emerged that reflect conflicting perspectives of the sector as either an economic opportunity or an environmental threat. In both countries, government officials have expressed concern about the environmental impact of offshore aquaculture. “We’re very concerned as a government about protecting wild salmon and the migratory routes that they use and we’re very interested in moving to closed containment where feasible,” Doug Donaldson, then-minister of forest, land and natural resource operations, and rural development in British Columbia, Canada, said in 2018, as the government first brought up the idea of moving its net-pen fish farms onshore.
