The director of Christian County s health department hasn t had much of a day off since she joined county government in May, just as the COVID-19 pandemic was ramping up in southern Missouri. Dr. Karen Peak (her doctorate is in the field of nursing practice) had a neck surgery back in December; she worked the day of the surgery, she said. A salaried official, Peak has put in about 100 extra hours each month during the course of the pandemic.

The dock at Fellows Lake marina will not be ready for March 1, but other areas are slated to be completed by then. In a meeting Jan. 20, officials listened to updates regarding a mountain bike trail, dock replacement and more regarding the City Utlities-owned Fellows Lake. Construction of a new 6.65-mile long mountain biking and walking trail at Fellows Lake started in December, the first phase in an eventual 33-mile, $1.8 million trail expansion north of Springfield.

You see families that are going to do something and everybody has their nose in a cellphone, she said. We just want people to make memories of coming together.

St. Louis, Kansas City, Springfield and Columbia enacted them over the summer and so did some of their suburbs, but most other communities left it up to personal choice. As Gov. Mike Parson, a Republican, declined to impose a statewide rule again and again, it looked like things would stay that way. But as Missouri recorded its worst month of the pandemic yet in November, hospitals cried out for help and converted enough cities and counties to nearly double the number of mask orders on the books.
