View Comments Washington State Ferries pulled the ferry Cathlamet from service on the Southworth-Vashon Island-Fauntleroy route Saturday afternoon after smoke in an engine room on the vessel caused a large emergency response. The vessel was bound for Fauntleroy at about 2 p.m. when smoke began to billow in an engine room, according to WSF spokeswoman Hadley Rodero. No flames were seen. Passengers were mustered to the main deck in case there was a need to evacuate the vessel, and Cathlamet s crew followed fire response protocol, Rodero said. The vessel was able to make its way to Vashon and tie up and offload passengers, she said. There were no injuries, and the incident was over fairly quickly. There was a lot of smoke, so we had a big response in case it did turn out to be a fire.
