ROURKELA: With 2,073 new cases, Sundargarh on Friday dislodged Khurda for the first time during the fresh Covid wave to claim the top spot among the districts in the single-day infection count. Sundargarh also breached the 2,000-mark for the first time thie year.
Sources said with the Covid figure of Sundargarh suggesting high incidence of the infection in the district, long queues are noticed in front of the sample drawing centres. The waiting period for getting the result of RT-PCR test has been increased to five days. The sources said the Ispat General Hospital, which is the only centre for RT-PCR test in the district, is overburdened. While the IGH has the capacity to test 500 samples using the RT-PCR method, about 800 samples are sent every day. “Since the number of samples coming to us is higher than our daily capacity, the backlog is only increasing,” M Hota, director (in-charge) of IGH, Rourkela, said.
