This big, beautiful female bird had beaten the odds and survived only to be taken out by a dog. It’s an entirely avoidable death.” Dog owners are required to put their dogs through kiwi aversion training and get a permit before entering conservation land. “If dog owners take their dogs through kiwi aversion training and keep their dogs under control the chances of this happening would be greatly reduced,” Carson said.

Shea Lauty has been left with life-changing facial injuries after being attacked by a dog. Lauty was saved by a passer-by who heard her screams, ran over, and kicked the dog until it let go. By that time, it had sliced her lip open and punctured the skin on her face, neck and leg. The owner fled in his car with his dogs, leaving a “torn to pieces” Lauty and Beau behind.
