Network Norfolk : A record-breaking year for Mid-Norfolk Foodbank

A record-breaking year for Mid-Norfolk Foodbank  Wellspring Church in Dereham, Swaffham Baptist Church, and Fakenham Salvation Army centre have provided the bases for a record-breaking year at Mid-Norfolk Foodbank.  About 1500 children were among the 4000 people fed by the mid-Norfolk Foodbank over the past year. To help it meet the demand, the foodbank received a record 62.8 tonnes of donations in the year to March 1 2021 – compared to 44 tonnes in the previous year.  Almost 50 tonnes of staple foods, toiletries and other donated household goods were handed out to single people, couples and families from distribution centres at Dereham, Swaffham and Fakenham. Remaining stocks are being maintained in anticipation of another busy year, as hundreds of families grapple with redundancy and low incomes, as well as the arrival of home heating bills after the cold winter.

66 tonnes donated to Cromer Foodbank Cromer and District Foodbank continues to experience rapid growth, in terms of both donations received and mouths fed; with a new vehicle, staff member and name all in the pipeline. During the last financial year, demand for the Foodbank has increased significantly. Vouchers fulfilled were up 26%, number of people fed increased by 42% and the number of children fed by 66%, indicating a trend towards increasing demand by families. Incoming donations were 66,375kg, up a massive 50% on the previous year, which meant that the Foodbank was able to meet the increased demand.   Peter Wenham, Chairman of Trustees, said “In the last five years the number of vouchers fulfilled has increased by 60%. The goal of reducing the need for Foodbanks does not seem to be attainable at present so we will continue to work with agencies and community groups to meet the need of people in crisis for the foreseeable future. Breckland Council donate vital cash for foodbank which delivers to Fakenham and Swaffham  | Updated: 10:35, 21 January 2021 A foodbank which delivers food to centres in Swaffham and Fakenham has been given a funding boost. Breckland Council has provided £2,500 funding to the Mid-Norfolk Foodbank, to secure a new storage unit to help meet the increasing public demand for the community foodbank services. The funding will ensure volunteers can operate safely in extended premises, store additional food donations and meet the growing need for their services. Foodbank donations Compared with March to November 2019 to the same period in 2020, demand for support from the foodbank has risen by 50 per cent - with more than 46 tonnes of food given out in mid-Norfolk since the pandemic began.
