Northwoods Graduation Ceremonies Almost Back to Normal, After a Far From Normal Year

(Photo courtesy of Northland Pines School District and WXPR Radio) RHINELANDER, WI (WSAU-WXPR) — This weekend will be momentous for many Northwoods students, as they prepare to walk across the stage with their high school diploma in hand. The upcoming graduation ceremonies will almost be “back to normal,” after a year that was anything but normal. For many graduating high school seniors, the past year wasn’t what they’d envisioned. Online classes, mask requirements, and disrupted extracurriculars made high school challenging. But after a year of adapting to pandemic restrictions – coupled with a rapid vaccination rollout and changing CDC guidelines – the end of the year is looking a lot more normal. Instead of 2020’s drive-thru and virtual graduations, 2021’s ceremonies are back in person.

New idea to spread internet access in rural areas: Drones

New idea to spread internet access in rural areas: Drones Associated Press EAGLE RIVER, Wis. (AP) – Students in northern Wisconsin school district without reliable home internet will soon be able to connect to their school networks via a drone-powered cellular signal. The project comes from a Wisconsin startup via a state-funded pilot program in the Eagle River area. Wisconsin Public Radio reports the goal is to test the use of drones as a way to expand internet connectivity into rural areas. The partnership is between the new company, Wisconsin Telelift, and the Northland Pines School District. The drones will be fitted with cellphone towers that let students throughout the district get online even in areas where cellphone service and broadband access are spotty.
