Coalition sends letter expressing serious concerns over safety and well-being of children
Madison, Wis. – Citing serious concerns about the safety and well-being of children and the harm social media poses to young people, Attorney General (AG) Josh Kaul and a coalition of 44 attorneys general are urging Facebook to abandon its plans to launch a version of Instagram for children under the age of 13.
In a letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the coalition contends that social media can be detrimental to children for myriad reasons and that Facebook has historically failed to protect the welfare of children on its platforms.

Facebook has provided few details about its mission to introduce a kids-aimed version of Instagram, but the company is under fresh scrutiny as a prominent critic of that plan, Sen. Ed Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat, unveiled a bipartisan bill on Tuesday that would update the United States’ children’s privacy law.
The proposed legislation would expand the age range of children covered under the law and strengthen federal oversight of internet services aimed at kids. It also comes on the heels of a call on May 10 for Facebook to end its kids’ Instagram project from attorneys general of more than 40 U.S. states, among other recent pushback against the plan from lawmakers and child safety advocates.

CHICAGO Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul joined 44 other attorneys general in asking Facebook to stop developing Instagram Kids for children under 13.
Raoul cited concerns of cyberbullying and predators in a letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg Monday. The letter follows concerns from lawmakers that social media and increased screen time from online learning have been detrimental to young kids.
BuzzFeed News was the first to report that Facebook, which owns Instagram, was considering making a version of the image-sharing app for kids based on internal documents obtained by reporters.
