CoWin gives young urban people a clear advantage over older rural folks The digital inequality in India’s vaccination drive was clearly acknowledged by the government itself when it developed the CoWin portal. To mitigate this, the portal had and still has (for those above 45) a provision for walk-in registrations, in addition to online. The necessity of such an option is seen from the fact that over 80% of vaccinations till April were walk-ins. However, the Centre has submitted to the Supreme Court that “doses of vaccine are not unlimited…and permitting walk in vaccination/registration (for the 18-44 age group) is anticipated to result in overcrowding at the vaccination centres, defeating the very purpose of vaccination”, and thus this mitigating option is not available to the digitally disadvantaged in this age group.
