Microsoft’s annual software developers’ event, Build, opened up with the company’s CEO painting a picture of opportunity for software developers

Microsoft has kicked off its annual Build 2021 virtual conference with a keynote from CEO Satya Nadella discussing the increasing importance of software development. Then he spoke about the power of GPT-3, the artificial intelligence engine from OpenAI, which is capable of generating code automatically.
In his opening remarks, Nadella discussed the challenging year everyone has faced due to the pandemic. “Over the years, you have shown what is possible, helped society overcome enormous challenges, while at the same time overcoming your own challenges,” he said.
All-natural? We tried.
For those wondering why Microsoft did not simply go the whole hog and opt for an all-natural-language approach, skipping the Power FX scripting part, Lamanna admitted it had been tried, but was just not effective enough for us to ever release it.
As for preparing the model to allow the parsing to occur, Lamanna said the approach was twofold. First, the software had to be engineered to translate normal words we use everyday into Power Fx formulas. There s just the language itself [Power Fx] and expressions, he said, along with the Common Data Model Microsoft is keen on customers using.

Firms move to the cloud for all manner of reasons, but right at the core is a desire to, in some way or another, do things better. To achieve that goal ‘better’ needs to be defined and performance measured both before and after implementation. But this is often easier said than done and performance measurement can be hard to quantify, especially when cloud is enabling something completely new.

Vodafone is teaming up with Google to develop a cloud-based data platform to help telcos find new opportunities and improve relationships with customers.
Numerous studies have found that telcos are increasingly struggling to find new revenue streams, despite investing heavily into 4G and 5G networks.
The partnership is the latest trend showing a convergence between the telecoms market and Silicon Valley.
But there are concerns over where in the world customer data is processed.
The deal is set to last for six years and will involve a collaboration of up to 1,000 staff from both mobile operator Vodafone and tech giant Google, located in the US, Spain and the UK.
