Finance Minister Simon Birmingham says the New South Wales government’s plan to bring back international students will only be approved if the proposal is consistent with the current health advice.
NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet unveiled a ‘pilot plan’ on Thursday which could see 250 overseas students return to Sydney and housed in purpose-built student accommodation in a bid kick-start the embattled university sector.
“The caveats are obviously all these things are subject to health advice but I’m confident New South Wales has worked through that with their health officials,” he told Sky News.
“If their health case stacks up, if the places in terms of quarantine are additional to those for returning Australians, and the costs are being met appropriately by students or universities, then of course we will look forward to seeing those plans come to reality.

Finance Minister Simon Birmingham says Australia is still months away from establishing a safe travel bubble with Singapore as talks between the nations intensify over quarantine-free travel.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison met with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong en-route to the G7 summit on Thursday in which both leaders expressed their desire to resume travel between the two countries as soon as possible.
“The details in terms of a travel arrangement between Australia and Singapore will be worked out over the weeks and potentially months to come in terms of how we do it safely,” Mr Birmingham told Sky News.
Mr Birmingham said Australia’s current travel bubble with neighbours New Zealand proved it was possible to manage of COVID-19 while also maintaining free travel between two countries.
Any deal with Singapore would need to incorporate a different set of terms to address the nation's unique challenges.

Finance Minister Simon Birmingham says the decision to reopen Australia’s international borders will be made once the nation reaches the latter stages of the vaccine rollout.
The Commonwealth Government has remained coy on a timeline to reopen Australia to the rest of the world despite leaders in the agricultural and tourism sectors calling on government to provide a clearer timeframe.
Mr Birmingham says any decision will be based on “the best health advice”.
“We’re still quite some distance from that [reopening international borders],” he told Sky News.
“We’ll take those decisions based on the best health advice at the time we get to having a vaccine program that is fully available to all Australians.
“I hope we can have a broad reopening in a relatively orderly way once we get to that latter stage of the vaccine rollout but to hypothesise right now would really be to base it on evidence that hasn’t been fully considered.”
