Majority Leader calls for dialogue on constitution

He cited the processes of amending entrenched provisions, the appointment of key institutions such as the Electoral Commission (EC) and the processes of reviewing agreements and bills. “We are in Parliament and apply the constitution on daily basis; we know the weaknesses that confront us in many areas, including the process of amending the constitution, especially the entrenched ones. “The constitution itself is confused on what to do when Parliament has to abridge these processes,” he said.

Parliament firms up protocols after MPs, Staff test positive for Covid-19

+ Apart from limiting sitting days from four to two a week, Parliament on Friday announced additional measures to firm up the observance of Covid-19 protocols. The measures have become necessary after a number of Members and Staff of the House tested positive in a recent health screening exercise. Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Bagbin had earlier on Thursday informed the House that 15 Members of Parliament (MPs), 56 Parliamentary Staff had tested positive to Covid-19, in a recent test done by the Noguchi Memorial Centre for Medical Research in the House. Speaker Bagbin in the announcement said the MPs and Staff had been contacted and advised to self-isolate and had been given prescriptions to facilitate their recovery.

Business, Appointments committees constituted

The committees were composed based on the approved ratio of 138:137 for the Majority and the Minority caucuses, respectively. Per the approval, the Business Committee, which will comprise 20 members, will have 10 members for each caucus, while the 26-member Appointments Committee will also have 13 members for each caucus. While the Business Committee will oversee government businesses the House is to handle, the Appointments Committee will vet and recommend the various government appointees for approval by the House. The approval was given after a motion had been moved by the Committee of Selection for the House to adopt and approve its report on the membership of the two committees.

Graphic Online BY: Emmanuel Bruce 30.5k Shares 705 The Leadership of Parliament has recommended that the composition of committees and other parliamentary delegations, groupings, associations and the Committee of Selection be based on the ratio 138:137 for the Majority Caucus and Minority Caucus respectively. That, it said, would be in line with established practice and Order 154 of the Standing Orders of the House. After two days of meeting, the leadership in its report to the House noted that per the agreed ratio of 138:137, the 19 membership Committee of Selection, excluding the chairperson, works out as 10 Members from the Majority Caucus and nine Members from the Minority Caucus.
