Scopa chairperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa said that until proper action was taken, the fence would be a dark cloud hanging over Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Patricia de Lille and the department.
CAPE TOWN - Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Patricia de Lille has received another rebuke from frustrated parliamentarians for failing to take appropriate action on the Beit Bridge border fence saga.
De Lille on Tuesday returned to finance watchdog Scopa to account for the 40-kilometre-long fence which cost taxpayers R37 million.

The Department of Public Works will issue out tenders as part of its long term solution to secure the country s borders.
This comes after the R40 million botched Beitbridge border fence that was put up as a division between Zimbabwe and South Africa, ahead of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Answering questions before the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa), Minister Patricia de Lille says the department has so far received 16 proposals to come up with solutions for the border fence.
“On 26 April we had put out a request for information, we wanted to test the market and see what is available on the market and we had received 16 proposals about different solutions for the border fence including how to make use of the technology and all of that.
She said they are getting cooperation from a number of other countries in this regard.
Batohi said the ID is working very well with the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), also known as the Hawks, and that the ID brings a whole new methodology. The really big cases, that people want to come to court, have not yet come to court, Batohi said.
However, she believes the hard work of the past two years has laid a solid foundation.
She said the change in the Zondo Commission s regulations, to allow law enforcement agencies to access evidence presented at the commission, has made a big impact.

JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) wants Parliament s public spending watchdog to summon the new acting CEO of South African Airways (SAA).
In a statement, it pointed out that he had no experience in running an airline.
The party wants him to appear before Scopa and explain what he was going to do to ensure that annual financial statements for SAA were published.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has raised red flags over Eskomâs plan to raise the price it pays Australian mining company South32 to procure coal for its Duvha power station in Mpumalanga.
The union claims the power utility plans to finance the sale of South32’s subsidiary, South African Energy Coal (SAEC), to mining company Seriti Resources. This will be done, according to NUM, through a coal price hike and through a R1.3 billion prepayment of coal supplies to South32 by Eskom.
