The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes the report presented by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) yesterday before the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) regarding the alleged irregularities in the procurement of personal protective equipment (PPE) in the Free State. Following a preliminary investigation last year, the DA had found that companies of the sons of the former Premier of the Free State and suspended ANC Secretary-General Ace Magashule, known as Mtheko Projects, which provided liquid soap and masks, as well as an entity known as Marvel Deeds, which provided hand sanitizers, both benefitted from PPE procurement during the pandemic.

The allegations by unsuccessful Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (RMIPPPP) bidder, DNG Power Holdings CEO Aldworth Mbalati, in court papers filed before the Pretoria High Court about the involvement of family members of Minister Gwede Mantashe and senior Department of Mineral Resources and Energy officials in the bid process, must now trigger an urgent and comprehensive investigation into the bid adjudication and the scoring of the bidders. Further muddying the waters are reports that one of the successful bidders, Karpowerships SA, has entered into a BBBEE agreement in which one of the major beneficiaries is a former special advisor to the ex-Ministers of State Security David Mahlobo and Bongani Bongo.

SAA has been handed back to its board and executives after business rescue practitioners (BRPs) announced on Friday it had ended the business rescue process.
In a statement, the BRPs said they have finished their work after 17 months.
SAA was put into business rescue in 2019 and Parliament had two months ago asked the BRPs about details in exiting the process.
They initially said this would be done at the end of March. But on Friday, they announced the process has now come to an end.
The BRPs said the government had initially injected R10.3 billion into the business rescue process.
