Killeen s West Ward Elementary shuts down after 68 years of teaching | Education

As the school year came to an end in the final days of May, students and staff members at the oldest school in Killeen ISD gathered to remember 68 years of teaching and learning. West Ward Elementary School on 709 W. Dean Avenue first opened in 1953. On May 27 at 3 p.m. the school in north Killeen will dismissed for the final time. In a transition now two years in preparation, the students and most of the staff at West Ward will relocate to Killeen Elementary School, a three-level campus on Rancier Avenue that will consolidate West Ward and the former East Ward Elementary attendance zones.

Schools for sale: Killeen ISD bidding process postponed

The Killeen Independent School District provided an update on the status of four school campuses slated to go on the market this year. The Killeen ISD school board voted in favor of the sale of four schools at an Oct. 27 board meeting, but the schools arenât officially up for sale just yet. The four former Killeen schools are: West Ward Elementary School, 709 W. Dean Ave. Fairway Middle School (plus adjacent 1.8-acre parcel), 701 Whitlow Drive Clifton Park Elementary School, 2200 Trimmier Road Bellaire Elementary School, 108 W. Jasper Drive Clifton Park, West Ward and Bellaire are still in use as schools, but will cease operations at the end of the school year as newly built campuses open up. According to the Bell County Tax Appraisal District, the Fairway campus is appraised at $1.35 million. West Ward is valued at $736,915. Clifton Park is appraised at $1.36 million, and Bellaire is appraised at nearly $3.35 million.

Vacant Middle School in Killeen Catches Fire A Killeen ISD school building that hasn t been in use since 2009 caught fire in the early hours on Friday. According to a report from the Killeen Daily Herald, the long abandoned Fairway Middle School campus in Killeen on Whitlow Drive caught fire. Our partners at KWTX report that a KISD police officer alerted officials about the fire at the structure at 701 Whitlow Drive at approximately 3:40 AM. KXXV reports that The Killeen Fire Department immediately responded and authorities believe that the fire initially began in the gymnasium. About 8 fire engines reported to the scene, and while the fire has been contained, by 8 AM firefighters were still working to completely extinguish the flames.
