Â Judge Helen Syme on Thursday sentenced Hayne to a maximum of five years and nine months behind bars, with a non-parole period of three years and eight months. Â He will be eligible for release on January 5, 2025. Â She clearly said no several times and indicated by her actions, Judge Syme said, before handing down her sentence at the Newcastle District Court. Â

Jarryd Hayne will appeal his lengthy prison sentence after he was jailed for five years over the rape of a young woman in her bedroom.
The footy star s lawyers on Friday lodged papers with the New South Wales Supreme Court after he spent his first night behind bars.
He has filed a Notice of Intention to Appeal with the state s highest court - the first step in his attempt to overturn the jail term.
Hayne s legal team have 12 months to launch a formal appeal.
The 33-year-old was sentenced to five years and nine months for raping the young woman.
