11:00 a.m. -Â Shortly after 10:00 a.m., Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby said one man had been detained, and the other is believed to have stolen a pickup truck in that area. He is described as a white male, medium build, wearing a teal color shirt. The stolen vehicle is described as a 2017 dark gray Ford F-150 pickup truck with Louisiana license plate C549061.
8:59 a.m. - In a report from KJAS in Japer, Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby says a manhunt in underway near Burkeville. Newton County deputies were alerted to an attempted burglary at the automatic teller machine at the Sabine State Bank on Highway 63 at Burkeville on Monday morning and arrived to find two men in the act of the crime.
Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby said Wednesday that a weekend death is under investigation. It happened at a location on Farm to Market Road 2939, also known as Baptist Encampment Road, near County Road 3026, a few miles southwest of Newton.
Burby said a call came in reporting a medical problem involving a 60-year-old man, and he died after an ambulance crew arrived.
Burby said a Justice of the Peace pronounced the man dead at the scene and ordered an autopsy, which was conducted earlier this week in Jefferson County. Burby said his department is now waiting for the autopsy results to return.
On Friday, January 15, 2021, a Newton County Sheriff s Deputy was pursing suspects after they fled from a traffic stop. The suspects disappeared on foot south of Bon Wier.
Tueday, January 19, 2021, Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby said the female suspect has been taken into custody, but the male suspect remains at large.
The female, Brandie Clark, was already wanted for motion to revoke probation on an original charge of possession of a controlled substance. Burby said his department has now filed on her for tampering or fabricating physical evidence. Her bond is set at a combined total of $25,000.00.
The male was identified as Roy Caldwell. He is named in a warrant for evading arrest or detention with a motor vehicle.
