Wellesley family dealt with kidney transplant, COVID

Wicked Local The Kelley family has had more than its share of hardship over the years, but they are also deeply grateful for a miracle that looked like it might never happen. Mary Jane had struggled with a rare blood cancer in the past, and by April 2019 she was  in stage 5 kidney failure, undergoing dialysis three times a week. Her husband, Jerry, launched a frantic effort to get out the word that she needed a living donor for a transplant, but so far, his campaign had not worked. Then a stranger who lived just streets away stepped forward. The transplant, which took place in October 2019, was successful but recovery was long and difficult. Today, mindful of both her heath and the threat of COVID-19, their world is largely confined to a daily ride to Starbucks and the Captain Marden s food truck. Mary Jane is able to take small walks with a cane.

Fatal Newton Police shooting: Memorial held to honor Michael Conlon

Fatal Newton Police shooting: Memorial held to honor Michael Conlon Wicked Local Holding bouquets of flowers, a small group of people gathered on April 5 at the Hyde Community Center park to remember Michael Conlon, a Newton Highlands resident who died on Jan. 5, after a police-involved shooting. “We wanted a space for people to  … commemorate his life,” said Emma Kellstein before about 20 people stood in a circle as an attendee read Conlon’s obituary. The Jan. 5 incident began after Newton and state police officers came to Indulge!, a Newton Highlands candy store, in response to a 911 call about a man, later identified as Conlon, 28, armed with a knife, according to DA Marian Ryan. The officers and a state trooper initially used “less-than-lethal” weapons to subdue him, but they did not work, the Tab previously reported.

St Vincent CEO Carolyn Jackson says strike part of larger agenda for nurses

St. Vincent CEO Carolyn Jackson says strike part of larger agenda for nurses St. Vincent Hospital CEO Carolyn Jackson alleged that nurses are being used as pawns to enact a union objective of statewide mandatory staffing ratios, something she said would lead to higher health care costs, delays, and not improve care.    “We think they want to take St. Vincent first and then march through every contract in the state and do the same thing,” Jackson said in an interview Wednesday afternoon. “(The Massachusetts Nurses Association) are holding the Worcester community hostage to try and make this happen, and using nurses as pawns so they can push this agenda to St. Vincent’s and across the state.”
