High school in Newport News taking steps to overcome Spanish language barrier

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. Right now, some Newport News Public Schools are still in a virtual learning setting. Warwick High School assistant principal Jason Taylor said better communication is needed between students and their parents who speak Spanish.
“We had some attendance concerns and we were following up with some families when we realized that the message was not getting out the way we wanted to get out. Parents were unable to read it or they didn’t understand it in English, said Taylor.

Locals see names on streets, roadways and parks ― John B. Magruder and Jefferson Davis come to mind. For some, they are just instructional, for others they are a painful reminder.
Students wear sweatshirts bearing such names ― consider Maury High ― to show school spirit.
Scattered across Hampton Roads, memorials to segregationists take the form of monuments, plaques, statues, street signs, schools and building names. In the wake of renewed calls for social justice, many are being removed.
Newport News Public Schools giving free meals to students
The school system will be handing out prepackaged breakfasts, lunches, snacks and dinners twice a day. Families can pick up the meals by curbside pickup.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. Newport News Public Schools have started distributing free meals to their students as some kids start in-person learning while others are at home under virtual schooling.
Starting Monday, the school division will give out meals twice a day at various locations throughout Newport News. This is all a part of an updated meal service plan.
The Chief of Staff at Newport News Public Schools and the Superintendent of Chesapeake Public Schools were hand picked by the state to take on leadership roles.
