Seattle removes Capitol Hill tent encampment that grew during pandemic Apr 16, 2021
The city of Seattle began removing dozens of tents surrounding Miller Playfield in east Capitol Hill on Friday morning. The tent encampment sat directly next to Meany Middle school and had grown significantly during the pandemic, up to over thirty tents by Friday.
For the past few weeks, campers have either moved out of the park or have been directed into shelter by outreach groups. Neighbors and housing advocates showed up on Friday in support of the camp, but Mayor Jenny Durkanâs office cites safety concerns at the park ahead of students returning to Meany on Monday.

SEATTLE A homeless encampment in Seattle s Miller Park neighborhood is scheduled to be cleared starting Friday, before students return to school next week.
On Wednesday, the city of Seattle posted an official notice on each tent, saying belongings will be cleared unless they are moved or taken to temporary storage provided by the city.

A homeless encampment near a North Seattle K-8 school will be allowed to remain, at least for now, with students set to return to in-person instruction on Monday, April 19.
The encampment composed of roughly 40 tents is situated on an adjacent property directly behind Broadview-Thomson K-8, just north of Seattle’s Bitter Lake neighborhood.
According to Seattle Public Schools, the camp “is not on school grounds, but on district property that is separated from the school with a secure fence.” Given its proximity to the school, students, families, and staffs are being asked to enter and exit facilities from a separate entrance along Greenwood Avenue.

Seattle city officials have completely cleared a homeless encampment previously located at Miller Playfield near Capitol Hill’s Meany Middle School.
A notice was posted on Wednesday ordering anyone camped out in the area to “remove all personal property” by 9 a.m. on Friday. Then on Thursday, the mayor’s office released an update saying that 30 people who had been camped out in Miller Park had been successfully referred to shelter.
On Friday morning, city staff and contracted outreach workers arrived at the park, and contacted with eight additional people on-site. Of those, five had previously been living in the encampment, while three were said to have “arrived more recently.”
