More than a dozen rail bodies have written to transport minister Grant Shapps urging the government to begin an immediate programme of rail electrification to help the UK achieve its climate ambitions.
In an open letter to Shapps, the group has claimed that the UK is at a ‘critical juncture’ in its aim to reduce carbon emissions. Recent analysis by Network Rail found that up to 13,000 single-track kilometres, or 450km per year, needs to be electrified by 2050 for the rail network to be decarbonised. In 2019/20, only 251km of track was electrified.
The industry bodies also warn that the industry would lose the skills needed to deliver electrification works unless a new programme was put in place.

Not the easiest to get on with, his direct, first-principles approach epitomised the engineer he was at heart, although he was also an accomplished player in the byzantine poker game of car-making politics.
