The dissolution of the Soviet Union and the end of the bilateral world order seemed to have a pacifying influence on European security. There was a hope for a new age to come – an age of peace, justice and equality. As we see today, nothing could be further from the truth. Since 1991, Russia has been trying to return to its former position as a global power using all means possible. In order to succeed, the Kremlin has been even ready to use what appeared to be the strongest type of weapon available –military force. However, since the presidency of Vladimir Putin, something has changed. Information has become a new, forceful and much more efficient instrument for Russia’s power aspirations.

The Department of German and French Languages of the Institute of Foreign Languages of PetrSU annually holds a scientific and practical conference dedicated to the International Day of the Liberation of Prisoners of German-Fascist Concentration Camps.
This year the conference is held in a part-time format and has several working sites. The conference is attended by schoolchildren, teachers from Petrozavodsk and Moscow, students and teachers of PetrSU, guests from Germany, DonNACA ( Donbass National Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture) and others.
On April 7, Associate Professor of the Department of German and French Languages Ernest Iosifovich Tsypkin made a report “Soviet prisoners of war in the system of concentration camps in Nazi Germany” for students of PetrSU (profile “German and English”).

On March 11, students of the Institute of Foreign Languages of Petrozavodsk State University met with students and schoolchildren from the sister city of Tubingen. The meeting was held in the videoconference mode on the ZOOM platform.
This is the first of four planned meetings within the framework of the virtual bilingual round table “Tourist Karelia”, organized annually under the leadership of Associate Professor of the Department of German and French languages E.N. Vorotilina and senior lecturer of the Department of Foreign Languages of Humanities O.O. Nikolaeva. One of the initiators of the meeting was the Karelian Foundation for the Development of People’s Diplomacy, headed by N.V. Lavrushina. The meeting was moderated by Stephan Klingebiel, an expert from the Youth Department of the City Hall of Tübingen.
