State and Local Public Bank Efforts Stalling Without More Federal Support

Like many banking executives, Harold Dixon wasn’t sure at first about the idea of a state government owning its own bank. His knee-jerk reaction was skepticism that a state government could run a bank, because state employees don’t really have experience doing that. And he would know that better than just about anyone in New Mexico. Dixon is CEO of the State Employees Credit Union of New Mexico, with 49,000 members. Only state employees could become members until 2016, when the credit union expanded its membership eligibility. “But once I wrapped my head around it and once it was clear they’re not taking your customers away, they’re just to help supplement what you already do and be another avenue to help you loan more money out in the community, it made a lot of sense,” Dixon says.

Helping homeless has been her focus

April 15, 2021 DOBSON Need help with an agency such as the Social Security Administration or want to address issues and concerns related to the federal government? An opportunity to do that is being provided Friday afternoon in Dobson, where the staff of Rep. Patrick McHenry who serves Surry County in Congress will hold office hours to meet with constituents, according to a Wednesday announcement. This will occur from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Historic Courthouse located at 114 W. Atkins St. in the county seat. Congressman McHenry, a Republican, is now representing Surry as part of his 10th District, due to a round of redistricting that resulted in the county being removed from the 5th District long served by Rep. Virginia Foxx, a fellow GOP member.
