NYS Senator Serino Says Budget Needs To Include Funding For Lyme Research

4:35 A New York state senator from the Hudson Valley is calling for the state budget to include funding for Lyme and tick-borne diseases research, education and prevention initiatives. It comes as other lawmakers and advocates share her hope that the COVID-19 pandemic is not distracting from other health issues, like Lyme. Republican state Senator Sue Serino’s 41st District includes a large portion of Dutchess County and part of Putnam County areas with high incidents of Lyme and tick-borne diseases. “Approximately 8,000 of Lyme disease and more than 1,200 cases of other tick-borne diseases are reported to the New York state Department of Health each year,” says Serino.

Hudson Valley Lawmakers Press For Permanent Vaccination Sites

4:30 Several lawmakers in the Hudson Valley are urging New York state officials to set up joint COVID-19 vaccine distribution sites closer to home. Local leaders in the region have repeatedly said traveling to the closest state sites is too far for many mid-Hudson region residents.  Democratic state Senators Elijah Reichlin-Melnick and James Skoufis, along with Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski, announced on Monday that they have introduced legislation that would require the state Department of Health to open state-run vaccine clinics in certain communities, including in Rockland and Orange Counties. Reichlin-Melnick’s 38th District includes most of Rockland County and part of Westchester.

Hudson Valley NYS Senators Seek More Answers On Nursing Home Info

3:58 Criticism continues over New York Governor Andrew Cuomo administration’s handling of nursing home death data during the COVID-19 pandemic. Two state Senators from the Hudson Valley are dissatisfied with different aspects, and both want to see the governor’s emergency powers diminished. Following summer oversight hearings about the state’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, Democratic Senator James Skoufis of the 39th district says the Investigations and Government Operations Committee he chairs and others have posed additional questions to the Department of Health and Cuomo administration, including about nursing home deaths. He had given them to the end of February to provide the data under threat of subpoena.
