February 08, 2021 Railway Age’s 2021 ‘20 Under 40’ Written by Railway Age Staff RAILWAY AGE, FEBRUARY 2021 ISSUE: Railway Age is honoring 20 “Fast Trackers” from a pool of more than 100 strong nominations for this year’s 20 Under 40 awards program. Established in 2016, the annual awards are presented to top North American railroaders under the age of 40 for making an impact in their respective fields or within their companies in the United States, Canada and Mexico. They represent freight and passenger railroads as well as the supply and consultant/contractor and government communities. For the 2021 awards program, Railway Age increased the number of honorees from 10 to 20, due to a growing number of entries and top candidates.

The estimated $70.4 million plan to convert the three vacant urban core structures into a 146-room hotel with restaurant and retail spaces is scheduled at the board Feb. 11, according to an agenda and documents released Feb. 4. A staff report recommends that the board grant conceptual approval for the renovation of the Florida Life, Bisbee and Marble Bank buildings, which comprise the Trio at 51 W. Forsyth St.

Fort Dodge’s historic Coppin Chapel will soon see some improvements thanks to a grant from the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs. On Monday, the department announced a $12,084 grant for the First Avenue South church. Built in 1894 as St. Olaf Norwegian Lutheran Church, the building has served congregants of the African Methodist Episcopal Church since 1919. The grant will be used to hire a preservation architect to assess its condition and develop a plan for rehabilitation.

Camp Umatilla wins award

HERMISTON — The Oregon National Guard has been recognized for its cultural resources management at Camp Umatilla. The guard received the Environmental Security Award for Cultural Resources Management for the 2020 fiscal year from the Army National Guard for its work in preserving the historical aspects of the site while upgrading it into a modern training facility. Camp Umatilla is located west of Hermiston on part of the former Umatilla Chemical Depot. The army depot opened in 1941 as the United States prepared to enter World War II, and began storing chemical weapons in 1962. It was decommissioned in 2015, with parts preserved for Camp Umatilla, a wildlife refuge and industrial development.
