Anne Costello, coordinator of the Travellers in Prison Initiative, said the Government must aim for a public sector representative of the population.
âAny new public sector recruitment campaign has to have provision for targeting Travellers. We need a Government internship campaign similar to those in Australia across all government departments and public bodies,â and internships must lead to âproperâ jobs.
Mr Ward said there were jobs in the public service that Travellers could do and he called for all public procurement contracts to stipulate that minorities like Travellers be employed.
âLetâs start by putting in some targets,â he said.

The use of peat as an energy source fell by 34% in 2020, according to new data from the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI).
The authority has today (Monday, May 17) published its Provisional Energy Balance 2020, which shows the impact of Covid-19 restrictions on energy use and related CO2 emissions for 2020.
Energy-related CO2 emissions fell 12.4%, or 4.6 million tonnes. This means that CO2 emissions from fossil fuels used for energy were the lowest since 1993 and were 31% below 2005 levels.
This marks the biggest annual reduction in CO2 emissions since the depth of the recession in 2009.
Report’s main findings
The main findings of the report show that overall energy use fell by 9.2%, relative to an economic contraction of 5.4%.

A county councillor has described how many elderly people must wait 18 months in cold, damp houses due to massive backlogs in the Warmer Homes Scheme.
Carrigaline Cllr Seamus McGrath was responding to a motion at this week’s full council meeting calling on the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications Eamon Ryan to drastically speed up the process.
It is critical that proper insulation is put in place in line with a modern day standard of living, the Fianna Fáil councillor said.
