State Department of Education Announces Expanded Summer Student Learning Opportunities

May 6, 2021 at 7:05 am Hawai‘i State Department of Education (HIDOE) schools will offer a comprehensive menu of summer programming aimed at addressing the learning needs of students as they transition back to full in-person learning and prepare for the 2021-22 school year. “Schools have worked hard to design programs of high interest for vulnerable students who have been less engaged during the pandemic as well as enrichment programs for students seeking to try new things and explore new interests,” said Superintendent Dr. Christina Kishimoto in a press release. In addition to traditional summer school, the Department is offering summer learning opportunities via the models described below.

MY EDMONDS NEWS Posted: April 28, 2021 118 The Edmonds School Board Tuesday night heard from Spruce Elementary School second-grade students about their work to help orphaned baby bears at PAWS in Lynnwood. Due to a drop in student enrollment, the Edmonds School District is working to find jobs for dozens of displaced teachers or risk issuing them pink slips by mid-May. Since March 2020, the district has seen an enrollment decrease of 173 FTE students. At the Edmonds School Board of Directors’ April 27 business meeting, staff explained that the decline in student enrollment has left the district with 47.02 FTE (full-time equivalent) employees at risk of being displaced. However, with 50.3 FTE vacancies to fill, Human Resources Director Debby Carter said staff are optimistic they will not have to resort to layoffs.

School board talks fall and summer learning plans | Alexandria Times

With Alexandria City Public Schools decreasing distancing to three feet in classrooms on Monday and students with disabilities set to return for four days of in-person learning in May, school staff outlined the much-anticipated summer learning plan during the School Board meeting on April 22. Running from July 6 to July 30, the summer session will involve four days of learning and will be available for all students, with specific priority groups of students targeted for the program. After the four-week summer session, there will be an entirely virtual two-week session from Aug. 2 to 12 to provide additional targeted support for students. According to Terry Werner, ACPS executive director of specialized instruction, staff is taking a “three-tiered approach.”

New principal picked for Ellendale

New principal picked for Ellendale NEW RICHLAND Staff Writer At Monday’s regular meeting, the NRHEG Board of Education approved the assignment of Nicholas Jurrens for the new Elementary Principal. Jurrens was selected for recommendation out of 18 applicants. Interviews were conducted on March 17 and 18. Second round of interviews with six semifinalists by staff and stakeholders was held on April 7, leading up to interviewing finalists on April 12.   He has currrently been serving as Elementary Principal at United South Central Public School, for the last two years. Prior to that he has served as K-12 Principal and Elementary Principal at other districts, and a few years back was a K-5 teacher at Kasson-Mantorville Public School, where he grew up.
