Windsor-Essex will receive double its current supply of COVID-19 vaccines in the first two weeks of May, the health unit has announced.
Roughly 44,000 doses are expected to arrive in the weeks of May 3 and May 10, the majority of which will be distributed through the region’s mass vaccination sites.

“Since we have hotspots in our region, that’s one of the reasons they (the Ministry of Health) are supplementing our supply with additional doses,” said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed on Monday.
Health unit warns of reinfection among previously positive COVID-19 cases
The Windsor-Essex County health unit is warning people who have contracted COVID-19 in the past not to become complacent about following restrictions as they can become re-infected.

There are 15 ongoing outbreaks.
They include two school outbreaks one in Ecole secondaire catholique l Essor in Tecumseh and one in Amherstburg Public School in Amherstburg.
There are 11 workplaces that have active outbreaks, including:
Three in Leamington s agriculture sector.
One in Windsor s construction sector.
One in Lakeshore s food and beverage sector.
One in Windsor s food and beverage sector.
Two in Windsor s health care & social assistance sector.
One in Tecumseh s manufacturing sector.
One in Windsor s repair and maintenance sector.
One in Windsor s retail sector.
There is one outbreak in Extendicare Southwood Lakes in Windsor with three staff who have tested positive for the virus and one outbreak in Southwest Detention Centre.
New Cases
Cases increased from 15,022 on Thursday April 22nd to 15,084 on Friday April 23rd and 485 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in Windsor-Essex.

The Health Unit says 28 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases, 10 cases are community acquired, and the acquisition sources of 24 cases are still being investigated by the Health Unit’s nursing staff.
The Health Unit says 685 preliminary or confirmed variant of concern cases have been identified to date (an increase of 50 identified since yesterday). They say 609 of the total variant cases to date have been the U.K. Variant (B.1.1.7), and 2 of the total variant cases to date have been the South African Variant (B.1.351).
I don t want people to be complacent and think that things are under control. These variants [of concern] definitely have a potential to turn around and increase at a rapid rate, he said.
The region has seen a sharp rise in variants of concern this month, with nearly 34 per cent of all active cases tied to the more contagious strains. Currently, there are 485 known cases of COVID-19 active in the region, and 11 ongoing outbreaks.
The highest proportions of COVID-19 cases are among children and young adults.Those aged 20 to 29 made up 28 per cent of the cases in the last two weeks, while children and teens made up 19 per cent.
