Former High Court judge Geoffrey Nettle has been appointed to investigate whether charges will be laid against police officers involved in the Lawyer X scandal.
Attorney-General Jaclyn Symes made the announcement on Wednesday morning.

Justice Nettle was one of seven judges of the High Court who handed down a searing 2018 decision that described as reprehensible the use of former barrister Nicola Gobbo as a police informer against her own clients.
Justice Nettle was on the High Court bench for more than five years after serving as both a trial and appellate judge in the Victorian Supreme Court and Court of Appeal.

A former justice of the High Court of Australia is set to consider whether criminal or disciplinary charges are warranted in response to the matters uncovered by the Royal Commission into the Management of Police Informants.
The Andrews government in Victoria has named former judge of the High Court, Justice Geoffrey Nettle AC QC (pictured), as special investigator, with responsibility for determining the need for charges in the wake of the findings from the Lawyer X royal commission.
The appointment, the state government said, is “another important step forward in restoring confidence in the justice system”.
