Judicial Financial Autonomy FG s Responsibility, Lawyer Insists

By Alex Enumah A constitutional lawyer, Chief Sebastine Hon (SAN), has insisted that the realization of financial independence of the Judiciary lies solely with the federal government. Hon argued that the ongoing strike by members the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), which has entered its second month, could have been averted if the constitution had been properly interpreted by parties. In a letter to the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) titled, “The JUSUN Strike Action and The Correct Position of The Constitution on Financial Independence For The Judiciary in Nigeria”, the constitutional lawyer said that all courts of superior record are creation of the federation and as such, the responsibility of the federal government.

Hon made the assertion in a letter to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, entitled: “The JUSUN Strike Action and the Correct Position of the Constitution on Financial Independence for the Judiciary in Nigeria”. The senior lawyer argued that the ongoing indefinite nationwide strike by judiciary workers could have been averted if the constitution had been properly understood and interpreted by parties.

Anambra NBA Branches Take Protest Over Non-Implementation of Financial Autonomy To Obiano s Office – The News Chronicle

Awka – Members of the eight branches of theAnambra State Chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, on Monday staged a protest at the Government House, Awka over the non-implementation of financial autonomy of the state judiciary. The protesting lawyers, are also worried that despite the concerns they had raised earlier in April, about the ongoing strike by Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, JUSUN, the state governor, Willie Obiano is yet to respond in any manner to the issue. The protesters bore placards with inscriptions such as “Gov Obiano please implement the constitutional provisions on financial autonomy and independence of the judiciary”, “Anambra State branches of NBA demand financial autonomy and independence of the judiciary,” among others and blocked the entrance of the State Government House.
