The lockdowns affected functions that did not lend themselves to teleworking. The worst-hit businesses were in the services, care, and hospitality sectors, which happen to be female-intensive. Therefore, the economic recession has been called a “she-cession,” which was the central theme of the 2020 Women’s Forum for the Economy and Society. Its key finding was that there will be no recovery without a “she-covery.”

The 37-year-old attorney and Ann Arbor native was ceremonially sworn into office by Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Bridget McCormack in the University of Michigan Law Quad courtyard Saturday, Jan. 2. Also sworn in was Victoria Burton-Harris, Savit’s chief assistant prosecuting attorney. Joined by friends, family and activists, they reiterated their pledge to reform criminal justice in Washtenaw County with racial equity in mind. “We know simply by setting foot in a courtroom or doing even a surface-level analysis of the numbers that we have tremendous racial inequity in our justice system here in Washtenaw County,” said Savit, who points to a report by Citizens for Racial Equity in Washtenaw showing disparities.

In the United States, a tumultuous presidential election and a wave of protests over racial injustice also drew relentless coverage. Overshadowed, to an extent, were other dramatic developments. Among them: China’s crackdown on Hong Kong’s democracy; an apocalyptic explosion in Beirut; the shocking helicopter-crash death of basketball icon Kobe Bryant and his daughter.

Managing Editor Things don’t always turn out the way we expect, and that’s something we should keep in mind as we enter 2021. It occurred to me as 2020 was winding down that I had started something during the initial pandemic-related lockdowns that I neglected to complete. Way back in March (a little more than nine months ago) I started making a daily social media post to encourage my friends to maintain a positive attitude while staying at home as much as possible. Right around March 17, when Gov. Mike DeWine and the Ohio Department of Health ordered polling places closed for safety reasons on what would have been Election Day, they also ordered “non-essential businesses” closed and urged anyone who could work from home to do so.
