On Friday, Ginsburg lay in state at the U.S. Capitol, the first woman and the first Jewish person to be given that honor in the nation s history. Ginsburg, who died at the age of 87 from pancreatic cancer, was only the second woman to be nominated to the Supreme Court.

AP (AP) In a year defined by a devastating pandemic, the world lost iconic defenders of civil rights, great athletes and entertainers who helped define their genres. Many of their names hold a prominent place in the collective consciousness RBG, Kobe, Maradona, Eddie Van Halen, Little Richard, Sean Connery, Alex Trebek but pandemic restrictions often limited the public’s ability to mourn their loss in a year that saw more than a million people die from the coronavirus.

In 2020, the nation faced two existential threats: an out-of-control coronavirus pandemic that killed more than 300,000 people in the United States in less than 12 months, and an erratic, self-obsessed Republican president whose administration withheld support from states with Democratic governors and held campaign rallies where hundreds of people gathered closely together without wearing masks. The threats blended as President Donald Trump allowed the pandemic to spread and openly denied the results of the November election that he lost by seven million popular votes and 74 Electoral College votes. And while both of these threats dominated the news throughout 2020, there were some LGBTQ-specific events that stood out for the history books.
