AMD s Market Share Surges on Steam and in Servers, Shrinks Overall

ExtremeTech AMD’s Market Share Surges on Steam and in Servers, Shrinks Overall By Joel Hruska on May 12, 2021 at 9:55 am This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use. Some interesting AMD market share data has emerged over the past few days. A new Mercury Research report indicated AMD lost an additional point of the x86 market for laptops and desktops in Q1 2021. This is the second time AMD has lost market share relative to Intel. AMD doesn’t appear to have a demand problem; the company is selling every chip it can make. The problem is that TSMC can’t keep enough chips in-market to feed demand. This allowed Intel to claw back a point of market share, raising it to 79.3 percent. AMD’s market share has increased 5.9 percentage points since Q2 2020.

GeForce RTX 3060 debuts at number 84 in Steam HW Survey

The latest Steam Hardware Survey is out, charting the month of April 2021. Checking through the charts there isn t a lot of earth-shattering data to share, but I do have some comments on the movers and shakers in the PC video card usage tables. Firstly, we see that the GeForce RTX 3060 has debuted in the chart, secondly there is still not a single Radeon RX 6000 graphics card to be found anywhere in this chart (which lists approx 95 GPUs with 0.01 per cent and better user share). The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 enters the chart, going from zero to 0.17 per cent in its maiden month. That gain is the second best this month, easily beating the RTX 3070 (0.09 per cent up), and RTX 3080 (0.00 per cent up). Actually, the RTX 3060 is second only to the GeForce GTX 1650, which gained 0.22 percentage points in April.

Oculus headsets used by 60 percent of VR players on Steam

Back when the Oculus Rift and HTC VIVE first launched, there was a constant back and forth in the Steam hardware rankings, with both VR headsets consistently overtaking each other. Now five years on, Oculus seems to have taken the majority lead.  The latest Steam Hardware Survey (via UploadVR) results are in, showing that close to 60 percent of VR headsets used on Steam come from Oculus. The Oculus Quest 2 sits at the top of the pile, with 27.79 percent of users, followed by the Oculus Rift S, which is used by 20.25 percent of users. In third place we have Valve’s own Valve Index headset, which is being used by 16.39 percent of Steam VR players. In fourth place, the HTC Vive maintains 11.38 percent of the market, followed by the original Oculus Rift, which is now used by 6.29 percent of Steam VR players.
