Submarine Force Atlantic announces Battle E winners | News

NORFOLK Commander, Submarine Force Atlantic (SUBLANT) announced the winners of the 2020 Battle Efficiency (“E”) awards, Jan 1. The Battle E competition recognizes commands that attained the highest overall or departmental readiness to carry out its assigned wartime tasks as a unit of the Atlantic Submarine Force, and is based on a yearlong evaluation. “These awards should be a source of great pride to each and every crew member,” said Vice Adm. Daryl Caudle, Commander, Submarine Forces (SUBFOR). “Congratulations to our Battle “E” winners! And even more important, congratulations to every submariner in the world’s greatest Submarine Force. Our Sailors are extraordinary warriors who bring our combat ships to life with a culture of excellence.”

The USS Rasher Was a Legendary Undersea Warrior

The submarine USS Rasher proved to be the scourge of Japanese shipping in the South Pacific. At 12:30 am, October 9, 1943, Commander Edward S. Hutchinson spotted his first targets as a submarine commander. His boat, USS  Rasher, was on her maiden war cruise out of Brisbane, Australia, and every man in her was eager for his first taste of blood. They were off Ambon when they sighted a pair of freighters that were zigzagging in antisubmarine patterns, deliberately making stalking difficult and protracted, but Hutchinson was tenacious. Throughout the night he trailed the careening targets, slowly bringing his boat within torpedo range. By the time he was able to commence his attack it was dawn. He fixed the targets in his periscope sights and fired a six-torpedo spread. Four missed, but the other two ripped open

7 Santa Rita, Guam (Dec. 28, 2020) –Lt. Matthew Flores, assigned to the Los Angeles-class fast-attack submarine USS Asheville (SSN 758) was selected as the Commander, Submarine Squadron 15 Junior Officer of the Year. Flores, a native of Las Vegas, Nevada, serves as the submarine’s damage control assistant. “My selection as Junior Officer of the Year is a big stepping stone for a tour of hard work done every day,” said Flores. “It’s great to be recognized as one of the best amongst by peers on the waterfront.” A dedicated leader, Flores was recognized for his work during Asheville’s 2020 Western Pacific deployment, his quick thinking, positive attitude, and tactical abilities.

DVIDS - News - NBPL Dredging Project Enhances Accessibility for VA Class Submarines

9 SAN DIEGO – Naval Base Point Loma (NBPL) is celebrating the Dec. 16 completion of a dredging project at its waterfront that will allow access to submarines with a deeper draft. NBPL is home to Submarine Squadron ELEVEN (CSS-11) and six Los Angeles Class submarines. Though the LA class subs are the primary users of the Point Loma piers, the waterfront also sees a lot of visitor traffic. Those visitors include the Virginia and Seawolf class submarines, both of which have deeper drafts than the homeported LA class. “The Naval Base Point Loma Dredging Project is a vital effort that directly enables the U.S. Navy to conduct undersea operations in the Indo-Pacific area of responsibility,” said Lt. Cmdr. Ronald J.
