To curb the movement of liquor, money into the district
Collectors and top police officials from the districts in Kerala and Karnataka bordering the Nilgiris attended a meeting with the Nilgiris Collector J. Innocent Divya on Friday, to better co-ordinate and clampdown on the illegal movement of liquor and unaccounted cash into the district during the run-up to the elections.

AAA To build a better rapport with local communities, the Nilgiris district police have assigned Village Vigilance Police Officers (VVPOs) for more than 854 villages and hamlets across the district.
The policing initiative is aimed at building ties with local communities and pre-emptively working towards solving problems faced by the communities, especially those in remote, inaccessible areas.
Around 500 police personnel, of the rank of head constable and constable have been assigned the task of visiting their assigned hamlets and villages at least once a week, interact with residents and hear their grievances.

Fostering better communication with Adivasi communities in the Nilgiris, the district police are conducting awareness campaigns about COVID-19, and about crimes against women and children, in the language the communities communicate with each other.
“When I used to visit Adivasi communities, it would be extremely hard to communicate with them in Tamil and we would have to use a translator to get our message across to them. This got us thinking that it would be much more effective to conduct awareness campaigns in their own language,” said Nilgiris District Superintendent of Police, V. Sa

It has been a week since an 8-year-old child, daughter of tea estate workers in Thuthurmattam near Coonoor went missing. With an intense search operation under way, and still no sign of the missing child, police officials are scrambling to find some clues that will lead them to the girl’s whereabouts.
