OIC to step up measures against fraud
published : 6 Jul 2021 at 04:00
The Office of Insurance Commission (OIC) is coordinating with health insurance-related agencies to curb a rapid increase in incidents of insurance fraud.
Despite the turmoil caused by the pandemic, the OIC insists capital adequacy ratio or CAR of the insurance industry remains healthy.
OIC s secretary-general, Suthiphon Thaveechaiyagarn, said the Consumer Protection and Insurance Participation Committee has approved three additional measures to curb potential fraudulent claims as referenced on social media.
The three measures include the strict enforcement of relevant laws, publicity of law enforcement and examples, and criminal complaints against offenders who incite others to follow them.

Plastic manufacturers under the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) are concerned about the increase of oxo-degradable plastics, which falsely claim to be environmentally friendly.
Oxo-degradable plastics are designed to break down into small fragments, but this causes microplastic pollution that harms ecosystems, including oceans.
Usage of plastic is increasing as a result of measures to curb Covid-19 infections, including travel restrictions and work-from-home guidelines. This has caused more people to order food, beverages and products online, resulting in more plastic packaging waste.
Even worse, some plastic makers who mix oxo-degradable additives in their products have alleged their plastics can decompose in a natural and environmentally friendly way, said Apiphop Phungchaikul, vice-chairman of FTI s Plastic Industry Club.

ALBANY Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Friday named a longtime aide and veteran state government hand as interim chairman of the Public Service Commission, where he has been a board member since 2019.
John Howard will replace John Rhodes, whose term as chairman and CEO of the organization expired.
“It is important to ensure a smooth transition to a new permanent chair, and I am pleased to help support that effort as interim chair,” said Howard.
