The nation’s first and only Indigenous eye specialist hopes it won’t be long before he is joined by more Indigenous ophthalmologists.
Associate Professor Dr Kristopher Rallah-Baker, director of Sunshine Coast Ophthalmologists at Noosa, took charge of the old Noosa Ophthalmology practice in June last year.
Having already built up a patient base from his time spent in sessional rooms at Noosa Hospital in 2019, Dr Rallah-Baker said the community had embraced the new practice.
Dr Rallah-Baker completed his medical degree at the University of Newcastle, before undertaking an internship on the Gold Coast.
Stints in the Indigenous Health Unit in Logan were among the detours to come, before he finally found himself in the ophthalmology training program with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists.
