PANAMA CITY Panama City leaders accepted a lease agreement for the St. Andrew School on Tuesday to use it as a community center. The decision comes after the Bay County Commission proposed a lease agreement with the city on April 6 for the building. The plan is that the city will have various community events at the facility, which should help the continued development in the area, officials said. Under the lease agreement, no portion of the land and buildings can be used for a private or charter pre-K-12th grade school.

EDITORIAL: Commissioners should ensure Oxford House follows applicable codes

After being “made aware” of what ultimately turned out to be three Oxford House homes for recovering addicts and alcoholics in three different residential neighborhoods, and after hearing from unhappy neighbors, the city last week said it intends to send the group a notice that it might be violating city codes. In Florida, Oxford House currently has about 55 homes spread across 14 counties in Florida, including Bay and Escambia counties in the Panhandle. And it is no stranger to litigation with a litany of disputes with local governments including one that went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Panama City Florida employee fired after filing whistleblower lawsuit

PANAMA CITY  A Panama City employee was fired Wednesday, two days after he filed a whistle-blower lawsuit against the city. According to the case dockets listed on the Bay County Clerk of Court website, former senior logistics manager John Paul Jones claims the city retaliated against him after he questioned if it illegally purchased Christmas lights last year. A termination letter to Jones from City Manager Mark McQueen states that he was fired on Wednesday  two days after filing the lawsuit was filed.  The lawsuit states that following the city s annual budget review last June, senior leadership decided to not spend any additional money on Christmas lights that year.
