Successful vaccination plan requires trust, education, equity

Bethany Hall-Long, & Cassandra Codes-Johnson On Dec. 14, 2020, as the toll from COVID-19 surpassed 300,000 deaths in the U.S., the distribution of vaccines began across the country. For many, the vaccine’s arrival was met with hope and enthusiasm, while others reacted with fear and uncertainty. Plans to engage all members of the community and distribute the vaccine equitably are critical to our achieving a post-pandemic society. Vaccinating people saves lives but also requires trust, education and equity. We have to get this right! The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately impacted minoritized communities in the U.S. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports more significant disease and 20 percent higher mortality rates from COVID among Black and Indigenous People of Color. 3-D Printing and Computer Aided Design Aids Structural Heart Interventions Hospitals say 3-D modeling helps preplan procedures and reduce complications, number of devices used and procedure time  An example of 3-D computer aided design (CAD) software from Materialise being used at Henry Ford Hospital to evaluate left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction from a Sapian TAVR valve virtually implanted in the mitral valve position. Henry Ford uses both 3-D printing and CAD to plan and guide complex structural heart procedures.  With increasing complexity of interventional structural heart disease and congenital heart disease interventions, 3-D printing of the anatomy is being used for pre-planning and practicing procedures, device sizing and as a visual reference for the soft tissue during procedures. 3-D printing has become more popular within the medical space as it has been shown to help prevent, fix and foresee procedural errors.

Nemours Children’s Health System, the parent organization for Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando, is planning to cut $100 million in costs and reduce its workforce by 3 to 4%, due to “another wave of decreasing patient volumes in the fourth quarter of 2020,” the health system said on Thursday.
