Flights: Concerns over bird strikes as reps probe incidents

On Monday, an Aero Contractor Flight NIG382 heading to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport encountered a bird strike on take-off at the Port Harcourt International Airport (PHIA), Rivers State. Also on Tuesday, another aircraft conveying the Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, and other passengers similarly encountered the same incident on take-off forcing the pilot to make an air return. Also on March 21, 2021, a Kano- Lagos Aero Contractors flight also returned to Kano after one of the engines suffered a bird strike during take-off with many passengers stranded at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport. Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) in 2020 disclosed that Nigerian airlines lost about N6 billion to bird strike menace annually. Arik Air alone said it lost about $3.6 million to bird strikes between 2013 and 2019.

THISDAY learnt that the aircraft, a Boeing 737 aircraft with the registration number: 5N: BBM had departed Kano for Abuja airport at 1:21pm, but made an air return barely nine minutes later when three blades in one of the engines were damaged by birds on take-off at the airport.

Our correspondent gathered that the Abuja-bound flight returned to Port Harcourt after one of the engines got hit by a bird on Monday, few minutes after take-off. The Director-General, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Captain Musa Nuhu, confirmed the incident in an interview with our correspondent. According to him, the pilot followed the due procedures when an airborne aircraft is struck by a bird and landed the plane safely. He, however, said the aircraft had been grounded for repairs due to the damage caused by the bird strike.
