Electricity consumers kick against proposed new tariffs

They maintained that there was no justification for any upward review of electricity tariffs due to the current economic realities and challenges being faced by Nigerians. The groups, the Energy Consumer Rights and Responsibilities Initiative and All Electricity Consumers Protection Forum made their views known in separate interviews with NAN in Lagos. NAN reports that NERC, the regulator of the power sector had in a public notice, announced that it was working on concluding the Extraordinary Tariff Review process for the DisCos.

The residents, during a protest held on Saturday, accused the company of introducing a load shedding plan, which they described as arbitrary. The protesters, who alleged that they bought all the materials used to power the community, accused IBEDC of serving them exorbitant bills despite epileptic power supply. The Vice-Chairman of the Electricity Committee in the community, Victor Odigie, told our correspondents that despite informing the firm of a meeting with officials on Saturday, it deployed security agents against them to avoid discussing with the residents.
