Today marks one year since former Fort Hood soldier, Spc. Vanessa Guillen, was last seen alive.
On April 24, 2020, Fort Hood officials sent the initial news release of her disappearance, saying that she had last been seen around 1 p.m. April 22, 2020.
In the following days, weeks and months, details surrounding her disappearance, and subsequent grisly end, began to surface.
During a press conference on June 23, 2020, following a meeting with Fort Hood officials, U.S. Rep. Sylvia Garcia, D-Houston, said that Fort Hood officials told Guillenâs family that a supervisor who was conducting barracks checks that day submitted a report that all soldiers had been accounted for, but he had since admitted that he did not see Guillen.

SAN ANTONIO – A mural honoring slain Texas soldier Vanessa Guillen was defaced again, according to a social media post from the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC).
This is not the first time the mural, which stands in Killen, Texas, outside of Fort Hood where Guillen was last assigned before her murder, has been defaced, according to LULAC.
In October, the mural was attacked just hours after what would have been Guillen’s 21st birthday.

KILLEEN, TX â The mural honoring Spc. Vanessa Guillen was once again defaced according to the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC).
In a Facebook post, LULAC says someone destroyed the heart made of candles that was next to the painting of Spc. Guillen.
In the post, LULAC says Sgt. Williams took the time to clean all the broken glass and the damage done and restored the mural. The hurt that her family is feeling and going through with the loss of Vanessa, Itâs so disrespectful to think that you canât empathize with a family that going through such a horrible loss, said Dorothea Goodson, Retired Army Veteran.
